I am arguing for non-interventionism. The USSR would have fallen regardless of what happened in Afghanistan - they were broke. The CIA was telling the president they were broke but the American numb-nuts we had in power refused to accept this reality because they had made the USSR suh a big bogeyman for them.

So the scenario is USSR is in Afghanistan - the jihadis are not being armed by anyone and thus don’t really exist - the USSR falls and forces retreat - Afghan regime in power is a reformed socailist secular regime like existed in Eastern Europe after the fall of the iron curtain - Bin Laden has no al-Qaeda base. No 9/11.
