There was the case of a WW2 veteran who wanted to go out on a flaming Viking barge.

He spent a decade planning and building the ship (a miniature) he wanted to be sent off in. The fellow was originally an immigrant from Norway.

His family said they were thrilled he got his final wish, after the Coast Guard took his ashes and vessel to sea (a ten-foot model from the plans of a hundred-foot Viking vessel). They launched the funeral barge about three miles off the New Jersey coast, setting it on fire with a flare.

The amazing thing about the model vessel was the man lost an arm in 1975 in an accident. He built his funerary barge with only one arm.
