Here, in ‘89, it was more behind the scenes; once the Central Committee realized the Czechoslovak Army was not going to fire on its own citizens, the StB declined to intervene (and to this day, there’s still no explanation on that one, other than maybe the Director General of the StB realized it was game over) and then when Gorbachev said, “LOL nyet” to a request to use the Soviet garrison to put down the crowds, the Central Committee pretty much resigned en masse and that was that.

It’s encouraging because there has been this trend towards authoritarianism in recent years globally. Lukashenko’s dictatorships collapsing would be great news.
