I wonder what percentage is human training advancement and what percentage is technology. There is controversy even this year over shoe technology that is allowing runners to break world records in Tokyo. Track surfaces are different and faster. I remember years back there were body suits helping swimmers shatter records etc.

Look at the difference in times in the marathon over the last hundred years. Some of that is due to the shoes, but by far it’s the training of the athletes.
