One of my favorite bits of space trivia is about Gemini 3 and the corned beef sandwich that John Young snuck aboard. NASA just gave him and Gus a slap on the wrist, but Congress actually opened an investigation into the matter because they thought that money was being “wasted.”

All in all, money was being “wasted” on those early flights by sending people into space as anything but passive passengers like dogs or chimps.
