Sisters of the Order of Mercy (Religious Sisters of Mercy, R.S.M.)

Founded: 1831 by Mary Catherine McAuley

Purposes: To seek personal sanctification through vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and to engage in works of mercy such as running schools, orphanages, hospitals and homes for the destitute and elderly, visiting the sick and those in prison and etc.

Habit: Black wool, plaited at the waster with black leather cincture, a light black veil, black rosary and silver ring. Some unions wear a crucifix tucked into the leather cincture. Headress and domino are distinct.
