IMO, it originally began being outlawed in the early 20th century because it was robbing the State of potential cannon fodder.

I’d have to go look for it, but the history begins with the American Medical Association, founded in the 1840s, who, as MsJ said, saw midwives as competition, so they started saying abortions were immoral.
