Their contracts, and the majority of their compensation, is tied up in those bonuses. It improves the economy how, precisely, to ruin people who were working to fulfill a contract?

CEO’s are a dime a dozen. They overinflated their value to the economy. They were able to do that because they were large and able to monopolize a part of the information structure in business to benefit themselves. Governments role is to prevent them from doing that to avoid corrupting the process of capitalism. In working to fulfill those contracts they ruined a lot of other lives. It improves the economy for every regular citizen to get rid of the economic thinking that goes on in a place like AIG. The government is at fault here also. I am not sure how best it is for government to be responsible.
