It’s in the same class of instruments as the hammered dulcimer (a zither), but has been around for a whole lot longer (evidence for the instrument goes back 2,500 years).

Strings have gradually been added to it since it was invented.

A friend who plays guzheng asked me to try playing it once. I was bewildered. I can barely handle six strings on a guitar. Watching them play is mesmerizing.

Those puppies are also frightfully expensive, and I see Luna has at least three, which she has modified to make them louder — probably by installing pickups inside.
