Donald Trump declares in proclamation National Maritime Day. (The day was declared by Congress as May 22 in 1933 to honour the contributions of the Merchant Marine in war and peace.)

Surprisingly, Mr. Trump did not make it about his Electoral College victory.

While National Maritime Day is not declared in the US Flag Code, it is declared by a US Joint Resolution, honouring the first trans-Atlantic steamship USS Savanah in 1833.

Naval and Merchant Marine vessels in port are ordered to dress ship. As is customary, Americans are encouraged to fly the National Ensign.
