Of all the tricks the devil pulled, the greatest was convincing millions of Americans that they are “rugged individualists” if they don’t know they’re benefiting from a social contract.

“Rugged” = individuals and families with limited income and resources negotiating one-on-one with multi-billion international corporations for terms of health insurance, employment, or financial services.

Because anything else would not be as ruggedly individualistic.
