I just saw an old episode of All in the Family on you-tube. What cracked me up was not only how much Archie Bunker sounds just like the current Tea Party rabble, but also that a lot of commenters——-to dumb to see how Bunker’s ignorance is lampooned on the show——-seemed to think that he was tellin’ it like it is. (You’d think that the laugh track would be a subtle hint….)

When the show first aired it helped create a society when people became embarrassed to voice certain opinions. The anonymity of the internet and the way the web helps like-minded folks to ferret each other out has emboldened people to reveal their ongoing bigotry and ignorance.

The comparison is surprising. It’s as if we did an experiment, watching TV in the 70s and being in the right wing internet in the 2010s and it turned out that the former makes you smarter than the latter.
