For some reason, this all reminds me of a letter H.G. Wells wrote to the Times during the Battle of Britain in 1940. The paper had published an editorial decrying the country’s inadequate air defenses. Recalling his 1907 story “The War in the Air” (in which then-hypothetical German aircraft had flattened London) Wells wrote, “I tried to warn you, you damn fools.”
