There is a system like that in Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart, a dystopian future novel (from 2010) set in America after the Great Currency Collapse, in which anyone who wants to enjoy anything beyond the most basic has to have access to Yuan or Northern-Euro-backed currency.

You’ve mentioned that before, and that book is on my wishlist for my Kindle.

The usual assortment of doomsayers have been predicting a dollar collapse any day now, so it’s interesting Shteyngart chose Chinese yuan and Euros as the currencies of choice. If he were writing it now, he’d might choose some kind of Bitcoin-like thing. (Bitcoin was created in 2009.)
