Yes I made a big f’n mistake in 1980 when I hated Carter so much I worked for and voted Anderson in 1980 letting Pruneface Reagan get in. Learned my lesson the hard way…

Reagan won over 50% of the vote; people were upset about the ongoing hostage crisis, the botched rescue attempt, and the continuing financial crisis. Reagan would have won even if Anderson was not a factor. The votes for Anderson did not change the outcome of the election.

I voted for Carter (though like you, my heart was with Anderson) and my fiance voted for Reagan, though he later admitted that he would have voted for Carter if he knew that Reagan supported creationism.
