re: #727 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

I would say that’s because you’ve never lived as a black person in any part of the country. Look how they treat the Obamas - they are the first family…doesn’t spare them in the least.

I’m not sure where you are in LA (are you in the city proper?) or how long you’ve lived there, but there have been some improvements over the years.

And don’t get me wrong - it’s only a slight disagreement. I’m not saying the problems in “the south” are any better than anywhere else. But it’s probably clear I have a pretty jaundiced view of this entire country’s attitudes, not just the south’s.

Re: California, I left out plenty, because there’s so much to tell. There’s no end to the dumb segregationist passed by white bigots, against all comers.

I’ve lived all over L.A.—off campus at USC, mid Wilshire, Studio City now. Yeah, I know the city’s a lot better. The likes of Darryl Gates as Chief of Police is a thing of the past, for one thing.

And my original hometown of Houston has improved a lot as well. It’s the largest city with an openly gay mayor. Still, I’d say NY and CA are more hospitable to gays, since they don’t have anti-civil union (or anything for gays) written into their state constitutions.

All I have to go on here are two things: my experience and polling data. Texas seemed like a more racist place to me because I heard people vocalize blatantly racist sentiments more often there. And there’s quite a bit of polling data showing the south somewhat lagging behind the rest of the country in terms of overall tolerance.
