It also made the news because that was part of Civil Rights strategy to make it do so, all around the world. Especially at a time when we were supposedly fighting for the individual freedoms of Koreans and Vietnamese.None of this stuff just happened out of the blue.
I think that’s only part of the answer. Overall the oppression and violence in the south were demonstrably more severe than the rest of the country. Maybe I’m a “self-hating southerner”, as some of my friends have called me. But being honest about one’s heritage (mine) means facing up to the mistakes and atrocities committed by those people.
