Here’s where Paglia (as much as I love reading her) falls flat on her academic ass. The Spanish Inquisition, compared to the legal systems it superseded, was a substantive advance in the history of jurisprudence.

Even a maverick liberal is wrong some of the time.

It works for her purposes here. Name recognition with what equals persecution and punishment. Everyone is familiar enough with the Spanish Inquisition to see her point. Monty Python paved the way for her by educating the masses. Heh. So, her academic ass may be hurting, but her literary ass is not.
