Dao faced some serious drug charges in 2005 for allegedly improperly prescribing painkillers. wave3.com At the time, he was 57 years old.

AFAIK, he kept his medical license and is still practicing.

I dug a little deeper. The state medical board rescinded his medical license, but after he served his sentence on the drug charges, got retrained for some gaps in his medical knowledge, and got treatment for PTSD, his license was reinstated last year on a probationary basis.
