These charts are slightly misleading, though, insofar as they appear to measure job approval among those who self-describe as Republicans at any given moment, and that’s not a constant number.

Peel some of those Republicans away, even if it’s so they can pretend they’re “independents” to make themselves feel slightly better about themselves, and your 80%-plus becomes a fraction of an ever smaller whole.

Nice try. I agree, but then I am a damn naive optimist. No amount of reasonable thinking of what might be really going on is going to prevent those that want to wallow in the doom from finding evidence that supports that doom.

Even the old adage popularized by Mark Twain: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics” will not help.

What gets me is many are calling for the Democratic party to toughen up. I wonder when the people that make up the party base will toughen up and do what the Republicans do. That would be to “damn the torpedoes…full speed ahead.”
