granted, el-hi american history was a long time ago for me, so maybe this is fuzzy, revisionist, and muddled.

the way i remember it, the civil war was presented more or less as part of the common heritage of a single country that went through some turmoil, fought it out and then came to terms and moved on.

If you want to privately celebrate your family’s past and heritage that that is your own good right. But the motivation behind the public display of Confederate regalia was and is often not just a celebration of history and heritage but a reminder of who is still in charge.
