It’s occurred to me that today’s tea party politicians are the spiritual descendents of those slave-owning elites, trying to induce the poor and ignorant to fight their greed-driven battles. In truth, though, the situations are not the same. If the tea party base is really duped at all, it is not by the superficial ideology of family values or (again) states rights. They have been duped into identifying themselves with the power they see in the hypocrisy and greed of their leaders. It is their way of saying, “yeah, I’m a player too.”

Worth noting that many in the Tea Party are the literal descendants of the Confederacy, as well.
