Damn Cato… I agree with you, but do you have any idea just how intense what you said was? You probably do, but Damn.

To lighten the mood:

Years ago, I was teaching an ESL middle school class. One day, we are sitting around, the kids are doing homework and finishing up a project, all very low-key.

One of my Spanish-speakers turns to another Spanish-speaker and says, holding up his math homework, “How do you say ‘curve’ in Spanish?”

“Curva” she says.

At this point, my Hungarian kid starts laughing like a loon. “Say it again, say it again!” he yells.

The other kid looks confused. “Say what? Curva?”

Hungarian continues to shriek with laughter. “That’s great! Say it again!”

The Spanish speakers are staring at him in total confusion. I, on the other hand, have figured it out.

“Adam,” I say, “CUT IT OUT. That word means the same in Yiddish as it does in Hungarian, but it doesn’t mean that in Spanish. ‘Kay?”

The Spanish speakers look baffled. Everyone goes back to work.
