This is the image that the Right wants to sell us about Nature Nazis and Environmental Whackos: that they want us to live in lean-tos and wipe our butts with leaves.

Environmentalism embraces cutting-edge technologies that are modern, sustainalbe and efficient, while conservatives want us to cling to dinosaur technologies that endanger our health, trash our environment and make us dependent on unstable governments as sources of supply.

Sources that we have to maintain a military presence to guard and even intervene in to stabilize.

Nature Nazis? (I am trying to picture a bunch of people in dashikis and beads goose-steeping barefoot.)

As for using leaves, I imagine anyone who’s been camping a lot has probably done it more than once. Watch out for poison ivy though (I wouldn’t know about that).
