I think that effect does not depend on the voting system.

Personally I would describe the difference as thus: In Europe, coalitions are formed after an election. In the US, coalition building happens beforehand, except that you don’t know if your coalition will actually be victorious.

I disagree, for the following reason - Party identity is more important to a lot of people than ideology. People who agreed far more with Clinton’s positions than Trump’s, and who thought Trump was an unstable narcissistic con man voted for Trump, because he had an (R) after his name. If we had a plethora of parties, the moderates and liberals could easily form a coalition to govern and keep Trump out.
