They blame ā€œmental illnessā€ for the same reason they blame ā€œevilā€ when talking about such shootings: They want to portray the image of powerlessness, to say that thereā€™s ā€œnothing that can be doneā€ to absolve themselves of any responsibility for such acts. When itā€™s ā€œgang violenceā€ or ā€œterrorism,ā€ theyā€™re off to the races with ideas about how they can stop such and protect us from ā€œthose people.ā€ But when itā€™s a white guy in the grip of ā€œmental illnessā€ or motivated by ā€œevil,ā€ all they can do is throw up their hands and moan that thereā€™s just nothing they can do to stop such acts.
