Both songs are products on the 1980s, which is right around the time that they were totally misappropriated as “patriotic” songs by Republicans looking to wrap themselves in anything that seemed vaguely “Americana.” Most of those morons have never read the lyrics, they just repeat the chorus lines and hum the rest. But they all know the lyrics to “Proud to be an American” by heart.
