If I recall American history correctly, and I may not, was it not Kansas that precipitated the Civil War?

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 was definitely a catalyst of the Civil War. The federal government allowed for a choice among municipalities in the Kansas-Nebraska territory to choose to be slave or free. Which led to bloody clashes, especially in Lawrence, KS and places up and down the Missouri River near present-day Kansas City. John Brown and his family showed up and murdered slaveholders around these parts.
