Religion is failing to keep pace with society. We should not be compromising our principles, but neither should we be ignorant of the current social climate. Biblical scholars should know better than others that there are some rules that are allowed to bend.

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

The lessons are there - god is trying to show us what is right. But as always, humans are mostly running kicking and screaming the other way, especially those who’s power comes from religion as it is. For every Francis (St or Pope) there are 1,000,000 Franklin Grahams. Doesn’t excuse us from our duty though. As Rabbi Tarfun put it in the Mishnah (a collection Jesus would have known & studied) “Rabbi Tarfon taught: “It is not your responsibility to finish the work [of perfecting the world], but you are not free to desist from it either”. That is the real meaning of the kingdom of god - to simply work for a better world with all our strength, all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind.

If we believe, then our duty is to live that belief in such a way that others will willingly want to be like us & not like those pulpit pimps who blaspheme the Holy Spirit daily.
