Basque, Finnish and Hungarian are the three “oddball” European languages, with no similarities with the other language groups. I understand that some linguists believe Basque to be a sole surviving remnant of languages spoken before even the Celts moved in.

I have also read that the Basques themselves are considered to be the sole survivors of the Cro-Magnon race in Western Europe.
