I’m looking at old census numbers now (because of course I am). 1790 census had 3.89m people (including slaves). About half the population was in 4 states, giving them 8 Senators out of 32. So I guess we’re actually “close” to what was intended.
I’d be very interested in an infographic showing how that balance has shifted over time. That sort of thing appeals to me.
