Back when I was younger and actually occasionally helped others, I learned pretty quickly that helping someone move a mile was a lot more work than helping someone move out of state. Those moving a mile or so would just borrow a pickup so there’d be a dozen trips, they’d be unorganized and not really pack the small things, and they’d try to keep the big things together (not take the legs off a table sort of thing). And, worse, they would never supply enough pizza and beer.
My sort move was a lot of trips back and forth with Subaru loads of boxes, etc. since I overlapped my leases by close to a month. (I also donated a bunch of stuff like books and clothes simply as a partial downsizing.) So the moving van rental was primarily to move the large objects that would not fit into the back of a Forester.
