problem comes when it comes to guns being carried in public ostensibly to defend other people. it takes a lot of training, experience, sound judgement and nerves of steel to pull a gun in a situation like that and not cause even more problems.

Precisely this. In the home, you KNOW all the variables (or should know). You have more control over the variable. You DON’T have that control out in the open or public….and too many gun advocates confuse the two situations.
