Prosecutor: No race motive in shooting of Australian in Oklahoma

This is a problem I have related to hate crimes legislation. How can we assign motives without the ability to see into people’s souls? Sometimes we can only guess, and guess poorly based on limited evidence.

Example: a gang member (one white, one black) kills another over a drug/weapons deal gone bad.

Is it drug violence, gang violence or racial violence?

As long as the sentencing reflects the severity of the crime, I am fine with that.
