Intractable in that none of the options are very good. The fanatics tend to win the first election. Often, that’s the last election, or the last one that counts. Iran might be the poster child here.

Remember that Iran once had an election in the 50’s that put into power a secular but socialist government which the US toppled in a CIA coup and replaced with the Shah…

That was the “last election that counted” in their case and certainly their “poster child” moment when it comes to the consequences of poorly thought-out regime change
