As to the rest, they should have been holding live weapons while rappelling down. Once they saw the landing zone was filled with armed attackers, they should have locked their descenders and opened fire on the attackers. They could then finish their decent in safety.

They couldn’t do this because they were holding toy guns and had misread the situation on the LZ. They will learn from this mistake and not repeat it.

I don’t think they could have “locked” the descenders.

There were 2 ropes dropped, and 1 was pulled away by the mercenaries, the helicopter crew released it to avoid getting tangled.

As soon as the first 3 or 4 soldiers were down, more had to be dropped to get them back.

The shooting apparently started within the first couple minutes, according to the soldiers own interviews with Ha’aretz and JPost.
