My uncle served in the Merchant Marine during WWII. He was disqualified for military service because of his very bad stammer. He used to joke that the Army wouldn’t want him on sentry duty, because he’d be shot before he could ask “Who goes there?”

The Merchant Marine has proved its valour and patriotism over and over again. There is no shame in serving in the Merchant Marine versus the Navy; one might argue that it takes more courage to serve on a merchant vessel, since those ships are either lightly armed or unarmed.
