More on the Durham statue:
Durham protesters topple Confederate statue outside courthouseThis was a generic statue of a Confederate soldier and was inscribed “Confederate States of America.” It was put up in 1924. As with many of these monuments, this was during the period when Jim Crow was tightening its grip on southern society.
Hope they’re careful when pulling down these generic statues. Per Confederate in the Attic, most of them were made by a Yankee casting company that, at least once, screwed up an order and shipped a recognizable Union soldier. (A MA unit, IIRC.) It was mounted in the town square anyway.
