Given population densities in this country, I’m coming around to the idea that we have a structural problem with the Senate. When half the Senate represents just 18% of the population, and another 20 Senators or so represent half the population, it is hard to consider the Senate a representative body.

That’s what I have said for a long while: the Constitution has, in effect, gerrymandered the Senate so that a majority vote can represent 18% of the population; this is a serious problem. One day the losing candidate for President will receive 60% of the popular vote. We haven’t yet come to terms with the toxic design bequeathed us by our slave-holding founders. Unless we figure out some way to repair these flaws, we will face a very rocky future, even if we survive the current disaster.
