Was this the first time that those involved had been on a plane? Did they choose their seats prior to flight? What did they actually say, what was overheard, etc.?

All are important questions, but the flight crew has to be given leeway to ensure that the flight concludes safely.

The proper time to discuss the safety of seating arrangements is with the ticketing agent assigning seats. Otherwise, unless you are law enforcement, air crew, or see something gravely amiss, keep your mouth shut about safety/security arrangements. I worked briefly in a extreme security environment—it didn’t matter if you looked like Dudley the lost English tourist we would have turned you over to the FBI or Treasury or other people I’m supposed to forget for such comments. Unfortunately the security across the street was not so good and two people died.
