Orange is the color of the Irish protestants - indeed where the very name Orangemen comes from - due to the English King William III of Orange. William’s victory over James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 is commemorated by the Orange Institution in Northern Ireland to this day.

Wearing orange on St. Patrick’s Day is a very deliberate insult to many Irish Catholics as a result. I had a friend in high school who was the son of a Lutherian minister who would do just that.
