Its an armored combat vehicle, fully tacked, designed for combat against other armored vehicles. It is a “tank” and was an excellent if unusual one. Modern electronic stabilization and fire control systems rendered its compromises no longer necessary, but it would have done very well against a first generation T72.
If it were designed to haul crunchies (Aka infantry) or has armament insufficient to deal one on one with tanks, then it is not a tank.
PS. No wheeled vehicle is a tank. A deathtrap, yes, but not a tank.
Well, a huge variety of German AFV tank destroyers were used as tanks because they were much cheaper to build, but had difficulty in performing all the tasks that a tank needed to perform…which is why tank destroyers were kinda considered to be in their own niche.
