Nikon just came out with the D800 DSLR, which crams close to 38MP on that 35mm sensor. It’s total overkill; just another way to break into rich amateur’s pockets. I’m still shooting my old 5D for portraits, and my Mark III’s for sports. Mark III? 10.5 MP, and that is plenty.

There’s a penalty paid by squeezing more pixels onto the same size sensor. As pixel size goes down the signal to noise ratio tanks. That’s the real advantage of the Phase One. Notice that their largest chip is 6x4.5cm. If and when they come out with full 4”x5” sensors the results will be otherworldly. Right now the only full size 4x5 digital capture I’m aware of are the Betterlight scanning backs, and because of the way they slowly scan across the image plane they aren’t very conducive to living, breathing subject matter.
