Those first two sentences have the opposite meaning. If you agreed with Obama, Gates got arrested because he was black. Then you say the same thing happens to you, “even as a white man.” That is not 100% agreement. It is 100% disagreement.

Did you even read what Obama said about the Gate case? If you did there is no way you can draw that conclusion.

My understanding is, at that point, Professor Gates is already in his house. The police officer comes in. I’m sure there’s some exchange of words. But my understanding is — is that Professor Gates then shows his ID to show that this is his house, and at that point he gets arrested for disorderly conduct, charges which are later dropped.

Now, I’ve — I don’t know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home.

He said that he doesn’t know what role race played in the incident. And he said that the police acted stupidly because they arrested someone when there was proof they were already in their own home. How can you possibly interpret that to mean Obama said Gates was arrested because he was black.
