You Can Do Anything: Must Every Kids' Movie Reinforce the Cult of Self-Esteem?

I know they’re unlikely to do tihs, but I’d like Hollywood to have the second movie of a trilogy see a well-regarded main character face The Worst Day, that meaning a situation where even though he has done everything right and his allies are loyal, all that is simply not enough to overcome the forces massed against him.

The problem is that such a situation would probably be poorly received in the US.

Isn’t this the entire story of Empire Strikes Back where despite doing the best they can the rebels loose a base, Luke looses a hand and Han gets captured?
