This is going to make the Smoot-Hawley tariff kerfuffle look like a Studio 54 Disco Party!

One major difference: the Smoot-Hawley tariffs were, basically, a Congressional initiative, with the specifications worked out (over something like a year), and then passed and sent to President Hoover for signature (not that he cared).

This time round, though, it seems like tariff “policy” (using that word advisedly) seems to be mainly a product of the White House i.e., Donald Trump’s angry brainfarts over whatever “unfair” practice he thinks he can gin up resentment over.
