I went into the general store this morning, bought a couple lotto tickets, a small bottle of bourbon, cigarettes for myself and my wife.

After I handed over the money to the proprietor, I pointed out as the new vice-mayor I was still investigating vice.

There’s your problem right there. You’re supposed to promise to pay, but then renege and offer pennies on the dollar because the bourbon was not up to your standards (which you didn’t notice until you’d drank it all).
