Sure do. My son is on the autism spectrum and I wanted to hear what she had to say about employment and fair wages for people like my kid. That’s what took me to her website. Thinking about all that pisses me off and makes me sad. The unemployment rate among autistic adults sits at about 80 percent. If autistic people go through agencies designed to help them, they get stuck with low wage shitty jobs. No one suggests or offers support for trade schools or college. There is little chance for promotion or advancement in these jobs either. My kid opted out of the system, but that also means he has to spend lots of time masking his autism which is exhausting and impossible, so he’s lost three jobs over the last 6 months. He’s working for a temp agency with a shot at full time with Stein Mart, we’ll see how it goes. But 11.50 an hour is not a living. wage, neither is the 13 he will make if Stein Mart decides to take his status from temp guy to full time employment. There’s got to be a better way. And don’t get me started on Goodwill and their abuse of the system. It’s actually legal to pay disabled people less than minimum wage. No. That has to change.
