Lynne Truss (“Eats, Shoots and Leaves”) gives a good account of why the comma is so impossible in English. It is not just a matter of learning a lot of “If x then y” rules, it is a matter of appreciated grammar and the structure of the sentence you are forming (To people who comprehend neither grammar nor sentence structure).
And don’t even get me going on hyphenation.
I have that book.
