I don’t like the term “New Cold War”. Despite superficial similarities, Russia’s goals are not the same as the USSR. They do wish to reunite the old Russian Empire, but not to spread a worldwide political/economic ideology.

As for meddling in foreign elections, that is something that many nations do, including the USA. The disturbing part is how Americans are accepting or even actively soliciting such interference - and brazenly getting away with it.

The “cold” in Cold War referred to the fact that the two countries, while engaging in political and economic confrontation, weren’t firing weapons at each other, even if they might use proxies against each other. That term is still valid today as it was then.

It can also be used to describe what is happening here, kind of a Cold Civil War.
